We find Tankawosho breaking up a wooden statue of Buddha on a wintry day to make a fire. “What sacrilege!” said the horror-stricken bystander. “I wish to get the Shali out of the ashes,” calmly rejoined the Zen. “But you certainly will not get Shali from this image!” was the angry retort, to which Tanka replied, “If I do not, this is certainly not a Buddha and I am committing no sacrilege.” Then he turned to warm himself over the kindling fire. 丹霞和尚は大寒の日に木仏を取って之を焚いたという話がある。傍に居た人は非常に恐れて言った、「何とまあ勿体ない！」と。和尚は落着き払って答へた、「わしは仏様を焼いて、お前さん達の有りがたがっているお舎利を取るのだ。」「木仏の頭からお舎利が出てたまるものですか。」と突慳貪な受答へに丹霞和尚が応へて言った、「若し、お舎利の出ない仏様なら、何も勿体ないことはないではないか。」そういって振向いて焚火に身体を温めた。
